The Values of the Middle

It was gratifying to read the diatribes against progressive taxation (“Why penalize the rich guy?”) and the idea of saving money on the increasing number of medically uninsured (“Falling short on the issues”).

Interesting that Blue Cross, not a socialist corporation, has proposed universal health coverage for Minnesotans. The increased investment required to save the public cost of emergency room visits may be well worth the cost, and you and I can benefit as taxpayers.

The idea of “paying as you go” for government can not only save money our kids and grandkids might spend more wisely, we would also save the additional interest charges we now pay on Minnesota’s bonds, which resulted from the short-sighted “no-new-tax” policy incumbents pledged themselves to in St Paul.

Whether it’s implemented on the federal level by people like Coleen Rowley, or at the Legislature by folks like Sandra Masin in Eagan-Burnsville, “pay-go” is a more honest, less expensive method of government spending. It can allow our class sizes to recede below 30 per class, reduce our unemployment costs, and permit our skyrocketing property taxes to cool. Folks in the middle can get it.

"Some people don't like reality and develop a 'creative truth' to suit their needs.  I believe in honesty whether or not I gain from it.  Period."
